माहिती
Rebuild Mumbai maps places in the city where informal settlements made way for new buildings: rehab towers, homes for sale, offices, roads. Each site is built in front of you by a tower crane, then the dated satellite imagery shows what stands there now.
The record comes from a public research thread by @RahulChels on X, and from the site outlines he drew and shared with this project. Imagery is from Esri World Imagery Wayback, which keeps every past version of its world imagery with dates.
How each site is made
- The site, its project, its developers and its period of change come from the post, in the author's words where he named them.
- The outline on the map is his drawing. The plot area is measured from it.
- The years come from Esri Wayback metadata at the centre of the plot: the capture date and the satellite provider for each version.
- Anything the sources do not say is marked Data needed. Families rehoused is not stated for any site yet.
What is left out
- Posts outside Mumbai (Pune and Thane).
- Sites that are not informal settlements: chawl clusters, old industrial units, barracks, and a MHADA layout.
- Two overview maps that cover many sites at once.
- Posts with no outline yet. They are listed in the project's to-do file until a location is confirmed.
- Years before May 2012. Wayback's oldest capture of Mumbai is from then, so posts that compare earlier years show the oldest Wayback capture instead, with its real date. No other imagery is used.

Redevelopment brings new homes and roads. It also has known problems, documented by researchers, courts and reporters. Each point links to its source.
Words on this site
This site says "informal settlement" or "settlement". It shows building, never destruction. The people who lived and live in these places are residents of the city, and the record is about what was built.
